Step inside and the eye goes straight to a monolithic stupa from the 1st century CE, carved from the hall's own rock. Intricate animal and rider carvings surround it, and they reward a slow walk along the full length of the hall. Those same walls record gifts from monks, nuns, traders, kings, and villages, a glimpse of how ancient society funded the work.
The Archaeological Survey of India protects and manages the complex, and it charges a separate ticket for entry to the caves. That pass covers the caves alone, and the hill holds a further site, right at the cave mouth, that needs no ticket.
The Ekvira Temple at the Mouth of the Karla Caves
Because the goddess's shrine sits at the mouth of the chaitya, a single climb reaches the caves and the temple together. The Ekvira Devi Temple, Lonavala, is sacred to Maharashtra's Koli and Agri communities, and devotees climb to it all year.
Entry to the temple is free, and its hours are set independently of the ASI timings for the caves. The approach is a steep flight of a few hundred steps, so comfortable shoes and water make the morning easier. Temple hours run in a morning and an evening window, with a break in the middle of the day.
A short drive from Karla, the 22 rock-cut caves at Bhaja date to the 2nd century BCE. It is described as among the earliest Buddhist rock-cut structures in India, and the Archaeological Survey of India protects the site. Carved into a hillside above Malavli, the caves are about 2 km from the nearest railway station.
The Bhaja Caves, Lonavala, once served as a monastic retreat where monks lived and meditated. Most are viharas, with small cells that formed their living quarters. The main chaitya features a large stupa at its centre, while its stone ceiling recreates the wooden beams used in earlier timber halls. Outside, 14 stupas stand together in a cluster, while the chaitya is approached through a distinctive horseshoe-arched entrance.
Choosing Between the Caves near Lonavala
Pick Karla if scale and sculpture matter most, since the Great Chaitya and its carvings are the heart of any visit. Choose Bhaja for a slower walk, with its viharas and stupas spread along the hillside instead of around a single hall. The Ekvira shrine is the choice for living worship, because it is an active temple rather than a protected monument.
With a full day, all 3 sites fit comfortably, starting with Karla and the temple before you drive on to Bhaja. Travellers short on time can manage Karla and the shrine alone in a morning, since both share the same climb.
